Gun Buyback set for August 13

The Dane County Sheriff is holding a gun buyback event on August 13, 10 am - 2 pm, at the Alliant Energy Center.

The event, “Gift Cards for Guns,” offers an opportunity to hand over weapons, no questions asked, and receive gift cards in exchange.

Funding for the event was approved at last week’s County Board meeting. I supported this funding and I thank Sheriff Kalvin Barrett and his staff for advocating, planning, and holding the event. Although not a cure-all for gun violence, events like these do reduce gun injury and death—they reduce the chances of a gun ending up in the wrong hands, and they reduce the number of guns a child may find accidentally.

And—as I pointed out at the Board meeting—these programs and events correlate to reduced suicide deaths by firearm.
